Writing Project #3 Final Draft
My story of Writing
Well , to begin with Writing came much later into my life .Reading has played a much integral part.From my earliest experiences I remember myself reading a children's book in sunny afternoon.By the age of 15 ,I had read all the novels by Jane Austen including 'Pride and Prejudice' apart from the Bestsellers like Harry Potter and Twilight Saga.and many more .At 17 , I can assure you that I have read many books compared to my counterparts.Currently I am in for Young Adult Genre.
It's important to mention my Reading journey to contemplate on my Writing path.I haven't done much writing apart from Academic writing ,the one you do in school i.e writing notices ,letters ,story writing etc.They don't much give you the nuances of writing.Frankly ,if I say I only did for good grades in English.
Coming back to Reading , the experiences I had as merely a Reader ,opened a new getaway in my life and most importantly ,compelling me to write.
In India ,English is a second language after Hindi but my habit of reading had made me fall in love with the English language.
It's because of Reading , I started Writing short stories which was immensely popular among my friends.Eventually reading a good book made my day ,I also wanted to share good books with other book lovers.So ultimately ,I started my blog- cum -website to offer honest book reviews to all.
I personally believe Writing is not a science rather it's an Art.Earlier I suffered from a preconceived notion that writing is only restricted to people with a lot of creative flow and immense word power ,but I am happy to state that the EnglishComposition 101,changed my outlook towards writing and broke down my notions and I have completely understood the theory of Writing.
Personally ,It has taught me that Writing is not a mammoth task and writing skills can be sharpened just with few tools and a willingness to learn and write.
This course has enabled me a passage for writing better .For this I would like to quote Natalie Singh -Corcoran words"First year composition isn't just the beginning of a new writing awareness ;it's a write of passage."
Learning to write is a complicated process and it does not begin or end with first year composition ,but taking a composition course is often a share learning experiences in Writer's lives.
How the course outcomes changed my writing for better?
The course outcomes changed my writing in many ways and it would be hard not to mention the fact that it has enabled me in becoming a better writer , reader and critical thinker.
Firstly, Rhetorical Knowledge -I didn't have any prior knowledge of this term before this course .But words of Brainerd Kellog,famous Rhetorician ,"Rhetoric is the study that teaches us how to invent thoughts and how to express it most appropriately in words .".This compelled me to think that Rhetoric is mandatory for writing.
Sometimes for me ,this thoughtfully using language becomes difficult as English is my second language and not my mother tongue but my Reading habit has helped me immensely in this case.My Rhetorical Analysis has increased in Writing Project 1&2.
Secondly,Critical Thinking ,Reading and Composing -Thinking is an important component of Writing as one has to cater the audience and give them the best of us.As a book reviewer and bloggers ,I have seen that Thinking is very important while writing.
I have already mentioned how Reading has developed my childhood but I too find Reading as a writer quite tough.
But when I started doing it ,I found that Authors like J.K Rowling has a different style as compared to Dan Brown's work.Reading like a writer can help you understand how the process of writing is a series of making choices and in doing so ,can help you recognise important decisions you might face and techniques you might want to use when working on your own writing.Thinking better and reading a lot ultimately helps in composing our writings.
Third one is Processes,this is the bases of our writings.So you have to read and do lots of research before the your writing and simply this is not the end.Post writing is very important in a writer's life.It involves drafting ,peer review,proofreading and revision.For me this part is essential as a writer in making I make many mistakes which get corrected by Peer review and Drafting .This course also showed me significance of Peer Review as my Peers looked at my mistakes which I had somewhat overlooked in my writing project 1 and 2.Also when I am writing a mundane book review I draft it multiple times to ward off errors.Any writing have errors in the beginning ,it's upto us to correct them before reaching the audience.
Last of the outcomes is the Knowledge of Conventions.You may write a masterpiece writing but without proper punctuation and words and phrases ,this instantly puts off the Readers.I have myself experienced so .When I buy free books from my Kindle Fire ,in many of them there are quite a few errors ,which instantly puts me off.One way to correct this flaw in your writing ,is reading .Reading allows you to look at words which you commonly don't even notice.
"To write well ,you have to read well too."
Of all the habits of mind ,two of them resonates with me .That being,creativity and metacognition.
Creativity is not a art to be mastered but to be rediscovered by us.We all have the creative juices flowing inside us.
"If you can tell stories, create characters, devise incidents, and have sincerity and passion, it doesn’t matter a damn how you write."
– Somerset Maugham
This quote resonates with Creativity and writing.I rediscovered my creative juices while writing Writing Project 1&2 and Book Reviews.
The most important aspect of writing that you just cannot do without is Metacognition or Reflection .John Dewey stated "Reflection enables us to know what we are about when we act.This is we're just not doing something mindlessly.By reflecting on what we do ,we are making with art more purposeful."
Reflect on what you are doing so that it becomes something that is important to you and to others and that you will develop the wisdom that will help you throughout your life .I have started reflecting on my writings and found that it's getting better every day.In this course's Writer's journals, reflection has been done immensely by me.
I would like to cite a example of my personal reflective writing of Writing Project 2:
Excerpt:
[My family truly love their Chai ,we start our day with big cups to tea and sometimes we even end our day with tea.Any guest who enters the house doesn't leaves the house without a cup of masala chai.Being born in such a household,the love for tea is predominant from a very young age for me.
To describe the immense importance chai plays in my life, I quote the following words of William Ewart Gladstone:
"If you are cold, tea will warm you;
if you are too heated, it will cool you;
If you are depressed, it will cheer you;
If you are excited, it will calm you.” ]
Learning to write by the way ,is about learning when and how to use these kinds of appeal.
My Growth as a writer:
This course has taught me many tools to correct my writing and take it to a new level.It has also taught me that a good writer is one who can adapt to her goals and interests to different situations for writing and expectations of diverse audiences.I have started using these tools in my every day writing as well as in my blog. Somehow my blog has become very popular among youngsters.Particularly my friends have started treating my writing think of an old proverb "Give a man a fish ,you have fed him for today .Teach a man to fish and you have fed him for lifetime",this is what English101 has taught and these tools will be handy for me ,lasting lifetime.
